Allied Bakeries runs a fleet of own account large goods vehicles and trailers which require regular maintenance and repair to remain legally compliant, safe and fit for use. Day to day duties would include a broad spectrum of activities under supervision relating to maintenance and repair of the fleet.

Position:            VMU APPRENTICE                                 Location:            Belfast (Castlereagh Road)

Salary:          Yr 1  - £12636 per annum; £237 per week; £6.34per hour

Should the apprentice be successful, rates would be increased with experience over a period of time to the full time Technician rate which is currently circa £27500.

Yr 1      £12636 per annum                         

Yr2       60% of VMU Technician rate = £16488        

Yr3       75% of VMU Technician rate = £20610

Yr 4      90% of VMU Technician rate = £24732

The Role:              

Reporting to the Vehicle Maintenance FLM the VMU Apprentice Technician will train for a total of 4 year before becoming qualified.  The successful candidate will attend the Northern Regional College on a day release basis for 3 years, putting their learnings to the test on the job for the other 4 days of the week.  At the end of the 4 years the apprentice must be fully competent in all aspects of HGV maintenance

Key Accountabilities:

Heavy goods vehicle Apprenticeship covering a range of activities relating to the up keep of our fleet of commercial vehicles and trailers. This would include following health and safety practices, vehicle preventative maintenance inspection and servicing, MOT preparation and repair. Also under supervision training in use of hand tools and general garage equipment would be provided.  Most work is carried out in house so there would be other activities within the role that would be beneficial including Tail Lift maintenance, Gas powered fork truck maintenance, and small amounts of vehicle body work repairs fabrication and basic welding processes.



The successful candidate will have predicted GCSE results of at least a Grade C in English, Maths and preferably a Grade C in Science and/or ICT.

Health and Safety is of upmost importance so the right candidate would be expected to act responsibly with in the workshop environment, use PPE as required and adhere to all site and legal H&S requirements.

The right candidate will be able to work as part of a team as well as on their own and would need to demonstrate a keen interest in this career path be expected to show a wiliness to learn, be prepared to use equipment/ hand tools, be punctual and attend college as required, attend other courses/ training that the business feels would enhance the role.

The apprentice must be over 16 but under 25 on the first day of the programme (normally the first Monday in September).
